Creating a Multi-Author Website with WordPress

Recently, I created a website for a small professional association of EFT practioners (EFT as in Emotional Freedom Techniques).  They wanted a website where they could easily enter their professional information and contact details, and of course, where potential clients could find them.

I decided that WordPress would best fit this brief, as it is so easy, even for newbies, to enter information.  But this was my first multi-author WordPress install, and it took some experimenting to find the most suitable plugins, so I thought I’d share them here.

First of all, I had to create an author page template.  I copied the archve.php, renamed the copy author.php, and then modified it, after taking a look at this article: Creating Author Pages.  With a couple of minor modifications, I had the author’s profile description showing up at the top of each author page.

Blog Post of the Week

This week, I was too busy with the day job to even download my email, let alone read the posts at Sphinn. So I ended up doing all of my reading on Saturday, which meant that it was easy to pick my favorite blog post of the week:
27 Secrets to Linking Like a Networking Master

Tiffany makes some great points about linking for networking, and practices what she preaches, with links to relevant posts on interesting blogs.

One of her 27 secrets is “Link out in every post” - well, I’m doing that here!

Sorting Stumble Friends and Fans

I enjoy Stumbleupon, but I also use it to build traffic to some of my site

Yes, I do Stumble my own sites, but only if they’re related to the theme of my Stumble blog pages, and I don’t Stumble any site more than once a month. A typical stumble in niches related to my blog will bring 200 - 400 visits, and far more if some of those visitors review the page as well.

The good thing is that many Stumblers look at more than one page, and my Adsense income is definitely going up on the sites that I Stumble regularly. - It looks like some Stumblers are bookmarking the site, and returning later to browse.

How to build pagerank for your Stumbleupon pages

My Stumbleupon blog (Stoush) now has a pagerank of 4. OK, maybe that’s not mindblowing, until you realize that I only started it in March, and that even my oldest sites only have a page rank of 3.

So how does your Stumbleupon blog get its pagerank? From your friends and fans.

  • The first page of a Stumbleupon blog shows a few people the Stumbler is a fan of, in the order in which they last came online.

  • The first page links to the Friends page, which links to a number of people who the Stumble is a fan of, and a number of their own fans, again in the order in which they last came online.

  • The friends page links to full lists of the Stumbler’s friends and fans
